Open-Source Urbanism

The City Space Share project was developed from an observation of a growing number of vacant storefronts and their ill effect on a surrounding community. Instead of the traditional, single-fixed user, the project proposes to invigorate the once under-utilize space by orchestrating a series of events sequenced at the scale of an hour, a day or a week.

Initially it may seem counter-intuitive to "fix" vacancy by introducing more users, but by increasing the rhythm of occupation the economic accessibility of a space is increased. By breaking down the occupyable time into increments of a few hours, the total cost of the space is distributed and thus reduced enough to be accessible by a local jewelry maker for a weekend shop or a seasonal cafe.

The Loop is the physical insert which re-aggregates to facilitate the needs of different programs. The docked position is a solid cube which Operators can deploy into the space depending on their needs. At the end of a program's time in the space the Loop returns to it's docked position acting as a reminder of the cyclical &#38; flexible nature of City Space Share.

In this aggregation The Loop plays with the popularity of food carts and aggregates to host multiple carts in one space producing The Food Battle. Food Battles gather vendors to test out who offers the best of the best, pitting one coffee cart against another to create a space of conversation &#38; competition where allegiances are forged and playful debate insues.

Twin Peaks, San Francisco, CA

Our site conditions and resultant site strategy were strongly Influenced by the topographical conditions of the site. The extreme change in elevation greatly affects the experiential qualities of the site; producing views, creating wind and sun microclimates, and affecting the site's accessibility. Urban Stitch takes on the role of literally connecting neighborhoods by intervening to connect the grid as it meets the hill.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/265001/UrbanScale_parti.png" border="0" width="670" height="422" width_o="786" height_o="496" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/265001/UrbanScale_parti_o.png" align="left" /&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/265001/perspective2.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="213" width_o="1200" height_o="383" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/265001/perspective2_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Site Analysis

To understand how Urban Stitch could best serve the community we looked at the demographics of the site and the city as a whole for context. We found our site is surrounded by many San Francisco schools and has an average of 200 children per census tract in the Miraloma and Glen Park neighborhoods. We also found a large percentage of the neighborhood is homeowner occupied.

These profiles lead to the development of: A geology museum to showcase the franciscan chert and teach the natural history of San Francisco to school kids. The Home Learning Center to demonstrate ecologically conscious renovations to update the aging housing stock and an annex of the San Francisco Building Department to facilitate experimentation with new building systems.

		<description>Pier 70 lays on the Eastern coast of San Francisco. The pier has a long history of industry and manufacturing which has greatly shaped the landscape. As the industry of ship building moves out of the bay the identity of Pier 70 is open to be designed as a new neighborhood for San Francisco.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/history-03.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="217" width_o="1000" height_o="325" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/history-03_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/waterlinechanges-01 copy.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="438" width_o="1000" height_o="654" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/waterlinechanges-01 copy_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Ecosynapse looks to redefine the industry of Pier 70 by continuing it's tradition of self-reliance and producing it's own power &#38; water from elements present on site. The project rethinks traditional zoning &#38; leasing structures to evolve at a pace set to the internet age, in order to develop a richly textured urban fabric.

Program Analysis

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/programdiagram-04.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="287" width_o="1000" height_o="429" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/programdiagram-04_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/programs-05 copy.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="91" width_o="1000" height_o="137" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298974/programs-05 copy_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Strategy of Occupation: Programmatic Framework

The Programmatic Framework (PF) is a strategy which offers leasable space for periods ranging from five years to an hour. The strategy was developed in response to constraints placed on Port owned land which may only be leased up to five years to non-water related programs. The PF supports a rapid evolution of Pier 70's identity and makes the urban fabric accessible to small-timers looking for an office for a few months or a start-up unsure of next quarter's needs.

Performative Surface

The Performative Surface is a second skin over the site which is molded to harvest water and energy. The surface folds to: capture rainwater, face the sun, gather rays of energy, touch down at waters edge and create a playful landscape on the bay.

From there we traced each ingredients’ path of travel from its original source location to our tacos, effectively creating the biography of a taco.

After the course, the Tacoshed research was graphically compiled by Annie Aldrich and myself which we presented at Studio for Urban Project . We summarized the different stories of each ingredients into three relationships which illustrated common conditions of factory farming. The maps also appear in the April issue of Meatpaper Magazine.

The Avocado is the Prima Donna of the taco, each fruit is check by sonar pulse to measure it's interior firmness. The frequency of the resonance corresponds to a ripeness index allowing grocers to specify how ripe they would like their product. All of this to insure a perfectly ripe avocado.

The Pinto Bean on the other hand is just one in a sea of many. It requires very little coddling; the bean pods dry on the stalk, and there is only one harvest per year when they are shucked and bagged. What is sold as 'Pinto Beans' may be any one of four species which are mixed together in the fields, indistinguishable in a sea of beans.

The Sour Cream was sold under the label James Farm. It was actually made by Scott Brothers Dairy, which also produces products for the Chino Valley Dairy. The sour cream itself is the same but ends up under many different names around the country to appeal to diverse markets.

The Cheese was produced by Leprino Food group which has ten manufacturing plants across the country. Each plant makes a handful of the products sold by Leprino, often overlapping the production of other plants. The mozzarella in our taco was made in Tracy, whereas a NYC street taco might have cheese from Wisconsin, regardless it is always Leprino.

Iceberg Lettuce has a shelf life of only two weeks. To achieve maximum expediency the heads are washed and bagged in the fields. Within 24hrs the lettuce has been loaded on a truck to travel to its final destination.

On the other hand Aluminum Foil travels over 17,000 miles. It slowly makes it's way from bauxite mines in Australia to be refined in Spain and processed in Chicago to finally be trucked to a store near you.

The 10X10 Cities was an exhibit which addressed sustainability within the urban context. The exhibit was launched during the AIA National Convention held in San Francisco, April 2009. The exhibit was composed of three components:

The Urban Sustainability Matrix - Compared 10 cities across the United States by analyzing metrics such as water consumption and population density.
     Exemplary Case Studies - Presented sustainable architecture project in same 10 cities.
    Imagined Futures Bus Shelter Campaign - Info graphics to illustrate the current problem paired with a sketch of an imagined sustainable future.

The 'Futures' had a double life as a component in the exhibit and as a series of bus shelter posters across the city. Each of the posters address a tenant of San Francisco's Climate Action Plan.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/clip_watercore.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="303" width_o="1200" height_o="544" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/clip_watercore_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Rethink Luxury &#124; Redefine Sustainability
AquaBox is a multi-unit housing project which rethinks the excess of 'luxury' by simplifying the private domain and moving some functions of the home into the shared space of the water core. The project challenges the conception that one must suffer for the sake of sustainability by finding luxury in this overlap.

As luxury condos pack more into less space and mcmansions become an ever bloated caricature of luxury, they deliver less of the pleasures they promise. The home sauna is really a moldy box, no one actually knows how to operate and the Double French hollow-core doors somehow open less spectacularly than one might imagine. In addition to disappointing performance these antiquated ideas of luxury are unhealthy for our cities and environment.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/parti.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="394" width_o="1200" height_o="706" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/parti_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

AquaBox proposes to trim excess from the concept of 'home' and accentuate the spaces we do use. Each of the units simplifies the private domain and connects to the water core which acts as a satellite extension of one's home. The water core is a tangle of paths through which each unit is connected to small 'neighborhood' clusters providing their daily water functions with access to the whole for a swim, steam or soak.

Each unit's program is organized from public to private with the various water programs signifying the level of intimacy.

AquaBox at Mission Creek
The AquaBox is located on the southern shore of Mission Creek in San Francisco's Mission Bay. The building presents a closed form to the street and dissolves on the creek facing facade to frame views of the water.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/longsection-02 copy.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="514" width_o="1000" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/longsection-02 copy_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Layers of Circulation Redefine next door Neighbor

The water program is distributed through-out the core to create new adjacencies across the building. Two Unit A's may be located across the core from one another but become 'next door' neighbors based on their connection through shared water spaces.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/model.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="288" width_o="1000" height_o="431" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13032/298976/model_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
This model was a mapping exercise to understand which units are connected through shared water programs.

The site for Danza Buenos Aires is located on the border between San Telmo and La Boca. San Telmo is the historical center of the city and embodies a nostalgia for Buenos Aires’ past of tango and art. La Boca is a working class neighborhood with many youths pushing the evolving culture of Buenos Aires‘ present.

Dance Buenos Aires
Danza Buenos Aires is located on the border between two populations, each offers the other a direct glimpse of a world outside of their own, the two connected through the common language of dance.
The tourist, attracted to San Telmo’s antiques and tango can come away with a view of what the dance culture of BA is today. The youth of Buenos Aires can learn of the diverse range of cultures coming to them from around the world.

		<description>During the summer of 2009 I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina and interned with Adamo-Faiden.

Adamo-Faiden was founded in Buenos Aires by Sebastian Adamo and Marcelo Faiden in 2000. Their work is characterized by cartesian lines and intermittent social commentary. Their work ranges from conceptual urban planning to built multi-family buildings.

The house was a work in progress while I was in the office, it was being designed for a son and his wife, to be built on the same lot as his parents house. The upper story's volume is outlined by a mesh screen, it serves as a private garden for the couple with the intention of extending the living space as their family grows.

		<description>During the summer of 2008 I interned at WRNS Studio where I worked on a project team dedicated to the Cosmetology School at Skyline Community college. As I worked with the team to produce a design development drawing set I gained first hand knowledge in the technical aspects of architecture as well as the collaborative process of design through my participation in client meetings, design meetings with the partner, and meetings with outside consultants.
